bought this vest on the eve of one of my first big adventure runs in los padres national forest. no time to try it out beforehand. no dress rehearsal. just grabbed a stick of body glide at REI on the way out, threw it in the pack, and hoped for the best.
i was nervous going in. the kind of nervous where you’re not sure if you’re actually in shape for what you’re about to do, or if you’re just about to find out the hard way. and then — i had the time of my life. ran under a full moon, headlight cutting through the dark & dust. that vest carried me through one of my favorite runs to date, and it’s been with me ever since.
what i’m running
Salomon Active Skin 8, size small, in Laurel Wreath/Lily Pad/Aloe — $115 at REI. (heads up: this one only comes in men’s sizing, so if you’re between sizes, sizing down is usually the move)

why it’s stuck around
comfort is what stood out most compared to other vests i tried on. the material is noticeably softer, and the front closure is a bungee instead of straps & clips — a small detail that makes a bigger difference than you’d think. so much more breathable than the stiff, buckled versions i tried before landing on this one.
it doesn’t bounce. i notice this most on the descents, when a bad vest starts to feel like it’s fighting you. this one just moves with you and gets out of the way.
storage is real storage — not the “fits a key and a prayer” kind. enough room for an extra layer and a snack. or, if you’re running with the pups, a full bag of dog treats and a dog bowl.
it breathes. hot days don’t turn it into a sweat trap the way some vests do.
the honest part
it gets dirty veryyy quickly. sunscreen, sweat & dust all absorb right into that soft lining. REI support recommends hand wash only, which is a bit of a nuisance when you just want to toss it in with the rest of your laundry. and full transparency — i haven’t washed it a single time since i started wearing it lol. no regrets yet.
who it’s for
if you’re getting serious about longer trail runs — the kind where a handheld bottle stops making sense — this is where i’d start. it’s the upgrade i didn’t know i needed until i was already wearing it on a moonlit trail, more in-shape than i gave myself credit for. also great for hikes or other day adventures.
my exact colorway isn’t listed on Amazon, so linking the closest match — same vest, same performance, just double check size/color before you buy.
